An Interview on The Amateur Traveler Podcast About Spending One Week in Western Newfoundland & Eastern Labrador
After being a Writer-in-Residence and falling in love with Western Newfoundland and Eastern Labrador, I went on the Amateur Traveler podcast to share my tips on how to plan an epic one week road trip to this special part of the province, and Canada.
Newfoundland & Labrador is full of exciting things to do. From its festivals celebrating Canadian authors, musicians and artists to scenic picnics you can take to whale watching and just generally immersing yourself in its awe-inspiring history and nature on land and in the sea, it makes for the trip of a lifetime.
As with any destination, though, there are certain places and experiences that come to mind above others. Many travellers may have their sights set on visiting the jellybean row houses of St. John’s, or perhaps even a trip along the Bonavista Peninsula. But they might not have plans to drive along the rolling hills of the Labrador Coast, or to see the jutting mountains and steep cliffs of Western Newfoundland’s Gros Morne National Park.
This is a vast province. Despite being an island, Newfoundland on its own is large and takes about 10 hours to drive across, from top to bottom, for scale. And that doesn’t even factor in Labrador, which is significantly larger than the island of Newfoundland. It’s for this reason that I wanted to share my thoughts on Western Newfoundland & Eastern Labrador when I was invited onto Amateur Traveler.

Chris and I both love to listen to the Amateur Traveler podcast. It’s a great resource if you’re looking for practical, straightforward advice on planning trips, specifically week-long trips to destinations all over the world. Guests come to know and understand the destinations they share about in all sorts of ways, and the podcast offers experts complete autonomy when it comes to sharing their itinerary suggestions with listeners.
This time around, I sat down with host Chris Christensen to share my thoughts on how to plan the perfect one week trip to Western Newfoundland and Eastern Labrador. We ended up chatting for quite a while, since there is so much nuance to understanding this part of Canada, and there are so many practicalities travellers should be aware of before they take off on their trip.

Of course, you’ll have to listen to the podcast in its entirety to hear all of the tips, but my conversation on Amateur Traveler has visitors beginning their trip in Deer Lake, Newfoundland before travelling up to Gros Morne National Park. It also takes you up along the northwestern Newfoundland Coast, across to Labrador and to the iconic historic fishing village, Battle Harbour.
